Obey the Avocado!

April 19th, 2007 by danma

Do NOT mess with the avocado, or it will mess YOU up!

As part of my previously-mentioned dietary switch from no fruit to lots of fruit, I went to the store and purchased a bunch of fruit I had not much experience with. Green apples, mangoes and avocados were thusly retrieved from Superstore. Out of the three, the exotic avocado was the most alien of new fruit. I mean, yeah, I had it in California rolls, but never really on its own.

My first one was so-so, to be honest. Its texture was interesting, solid but yielding like a piece of toro but the taste didn’t really grab me at first bite.

The second one was better… more accustomed to the taste of the fruit I found it more enjoyable.

At this point I was browsing /ck/, the Food and Cooking area of 4chan.org and discovered a topic on avocadoes. In this discussion someone suggested eating one raw with salt sprinkled on top. Taking this new piece of knowledge to heart, I had my third one with salt and discovered its true awesomeness!

Now, I eat avocadoes pretty regularly. They are an excellent replacement for meat in a meal, as they have lots of minerals, vitamins and such. However, due to them being 300 calories each, I don’t recommend one every day. I was eating them daily at first until I discovered how rich they are… now I have one every couple days and try not to eat much meat that day instead.

Cooking Danma: Okonomiyaki

March 4th, 2007 by danma

It’s been about a year since we started working on DAI-CAST, Ian Horner’s weekly podcast, and for this momentous occasion, Ian asked us all to make a little video about anything we wanted. Thinking about what to do, I decided that I should put together a cooking show and make Okonomiyaki, a type of Japanese pancake/pizza/omelet thingy. After a bunch of recording and whatnot, here’s the final result!
